Purpose: The aim of this research was to determine the weak and strong points of online public access catalogues (OPACs) in library of Iranian medical sciences universities in terms of information retrieval.
Methodology: Using descriptive survey 44 OPACs of all medical sciences universities were studied by checklist with confirmed reliability (α=0.74) and validity. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS software and descriptive statistics. Finally, some suggestions were presented.
Findings: More than 50% of the society had OPAC but it was accessible and searchable only in 20 libraries. The study of possibilities and abilities in OPACs indicated that they are in an acceptable state.
Conclusion: Access to search environments is weak. Characteristics and facilities in general search environment and keyword search environment are in good level but these facilities are not considered in controlled search environment. It is necessary for designers, planners and managers to have more attention to provide OPACs in all of libraries, employ web databases standards in the provision of accessing and presenting useful level of possibilities in all types of subject searches (particularly controlled search), and give efficient guidance and education to users in their searches.
